Description

The Far North is a region shared by Canada, the U.S. (Alaska), Russia, Denmark (Greenland), Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Finland. For those who don't live there, the region appears to be a bleak, desolate place of snow, ice, glaciers and bitter cold. But the Far North is home to many plants, animals and people who have developed remarkable ways of adapting to one of the harshest climates on Earth. This book in the Kids Book of series examines the region's fascinating history, modern life and fragile ecosystem with facts, stories, legends, illustrations, timelines and maps.

We got this book as part of our unit on the arctic. It is very similar to DK layout with large pages full of text, two page spreads on a topic, with illustrations with captions. I am not a huge fan of that format because my kids find it hard to stare at the same page for a long time and really absorb all the information there. So I docked it one star for that. But if you love DK books, then this one is perfect for your collection. The coverage is great: the polar sky, ice shelf, animals and plants, climate, history, and different people groups. My boys particularly liked the page on Arctic exploration with the map, timeline, and many explorers listed. (Usually you only hear about Amundsen.) My daughter liked the page on whaling. I really liked the multiple pages on all the native Arctic people groups with their distinctives, since most books we found only talk about the Inuit, and as mainly a homogenous group. Throughout the text there are many anecdotes, historical details (i.e. Peary lost eight toes to frostbite), and native myths. It's very comprehensive, even more than I was expecting! 2nd to 5th grade?
